Mosquitoes and Cannabis – yes there is a connection.

Cannabis and CBD topicals help with inflammation caused by bug bites. We take a look at preventing west nile virus and bug bites.

Summer time in Canada means that everything turns green (our favourite colour) and birds and bugs start to fly!

We love summer but we don’t love the bugs.

In Canada, mosquitoes can mean West Nile Virus. West Nile cases nearly doubled last year in Canada with Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba reporting the most activity. This disease can take years to recover from and it is incredibly profound for some.

Globally mosquitoes make people very sick and kill over a million people a year. West Nile Virus, Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and Malaria are all transmitted by mosquito bites.

To reduce the mosquitoes in your outdoor space try making it less mosquito friendly. Look for any standing water sources like the water in clogged rain gutters or planters and get rid of it. They like to find stagnant water sources and lay their eggs. The life cycle is about 10 days depending on the environment so you need to do a weekly yard ‘stale water’ sweep!

So how do you protect yourself against the nasty bites or worse – disease?

To protect yourself this bug season, cover UP in light coloured clothing, apply a bug spray and stay inside during the ‘witching hour’. At dusk when they come out – like a fog – to feed en mass!

Mosquitoes also carry heart worm which can be deadly to your dog!

If you are outside with mosquitos – try lighting up – is a great way to deter them. Smoke is not their friend!

To add even potentially more protection select a cannabis strain with high limone terpenes. Mosquitos also do not like citrus! Limone terpenes are great for anxiety, mood, stress, depression, pain and inflammation.

High limone strains include Cinex, Strawberry Cough, Sunset Sherbert, White Fire OG, Lemon G, Purple Punch and Strawberry diesel just to name a few.

Can mosquitos get high? No, they don’t have delta9-thc receptors so they are not “affected” by pot smoke.

If you receive bites – CBD and other cannabinoids can help by ridding the skin cells of the inflammation that is creating the itch!

Cannabis topicals are non-psychoactive – so they won’t get you or your family members high!

CBD is a well-known anti-inflammatory and when you rub CBD oil or other cannabis or hemp topicals directly onto the site of the bite(s), the itching will subside in a few minutes. Cannabinoids found in full spectrum topicals work by supporting the endocannabinoid receptors in your epidermal cells. CBD has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and it works by calming your body’s immune response.

If you suspect you may have west nile you should call your doctor right away.
