Growing your own cannabis at home successfully with help from the experts at U Bud Cannabis

U-Bud Cannabis Services

Growing Cannabis at Home is Fun, but not easy … Until Now.”

U-Bud Website

Canadian households have the opportunity to grow up to four cannabis plants without any legal recourse (excluding Quebec and Manitoba). Despite the cost savings by growing their own plants, very few people have taken the initiative to take advantage of this new legal opportunity. Why is this? Perhaps the stigma from years of hearing about busted home grows being smelly and creating a mouldy, dirty home? Or, maybe the concern of costs like power and water or the fear that the home will take on a pungent, skunky smell? Whatever the reason, David Kurth, CEO and President of U-Bud Cannabis Services, is looking forward to dispelling the myths and the concerns of setting up your own home grow.

U-Bud Cannabis Services bring all the materials to you. You only provide water and power.

Growing Cannabis at Home is Fun, but not easy … Until Now. We offer the best equipment fully installed and maintained by experts as well as experts to help troubleshoot and guide you through the process.

“People that try it, I would say, there is over 50% failure rate on the first crop.” – David Kurth CEO

Located Canfield, Ontario (Niagara area), U-Bud was, like many great ideas, born on the back of a cocktail napkin over a beer at a pub. As Kurth explains,
“I had been playing around with a couple other entrepeneurial ventures and I was with a couple of friends and it started as a drawing on a napkin over a beer.  We saw the legislation coming in terms of the 4 plant home grow, and we were initially thinking of some ideas around helping people grow in other locations. For example, I know a few people who are working on the medical side where they are setting up some facilities to have people come in and grow there versus at their home. We looked at the legislation for the recreational side, and saw there was an opportunity for 4 plants at home and we had some knowledge in terms of understanding what was involved in growing cannabis indoors and we knew it wasn’t easy.  People that try it, I would say, there is over 50% failure rate on the first crop. We saw an opportunity to figure out a way to do it better, easier, different and more in line with how things are trending with the sharing economy. You don’t necessarily have to own and acquire all the equipment and all the knowledge, you can do it more on a sharing basis.”

An idea that started on the back of a napkin over beer.

“When you order a grow from us its as easy as either phoning or sending in a book a grow form. There is no deposit required.” – Kurth

U-bud offer a variety of options with respect to the type of grow, and the quantity of yield that one can expect. There is the: One Kit Wonder, where you are set-up to grow 4 plants over a period of 3-4 months. The cost is $789 and the Estimated yield: up to14 oz. (Gov’ment price $3968.93). And, for those that are looking for something longer lasting, and bigger yielding, there is The Big Kahuna. A year long grow that will set you up with 12 plants in total, or 4 plants, every 3-4 months. The cost of this option is $1,789 and the Estimated yield: up to 42 oz.(Gov’ment price $11,906.80). They are currently perfecting an organic option that should be available to consumers soon. When asked about how one would go about initiating a U-Bud grow Kurth explains “When you order a grow from us its as easy as either phoning or sending in a book a grow form. There is no deposit required. If you want to get out of it, you just say you are not interested anymore, and we will walk away. When we show up we show up with 100% of what you need. All you need is an outlet, and we have designed it so it can be safe to run off of any outlet on a 10 amp breaker so just about any outlet in any home. We provide full instructions. We also have a weekly check-in with them. In the beginning it is a little more than weekly because we are germinating seeds and that’s the point that typically things can go wrong early. It isn’t a big deal if it does, it just means we start over on the seeds and we lose a week or two, but beyond that, we come back re-set it and get them off to the races. Then we have weekly check ins. We actually have someone who is helping us with the support. Every week people would send in a cell phone picture of where they are at in their grow,  and if there are any concerns along the way, they can call, email or text and we will make sure that we get them through it.”

“I think at this point in time people are interested, but a little hesitant in terms of exactly what to expect.” – Kurth

And in terms of the most popular option currently, “So far the most popular is just the basic One Kit Wonder we call it. We are getting some traction on the organic as well, and I think that once we get that perfected, which we are pretty darn close to perfecting, that will become another popular option. I think people are little cautious still at this point because it is a new world. If you have never grown before, and have never been exposed to the process and the equipment, and all that you have seen on the news are mouldy houses on fire, it is not quite what we are offering. I think at this point in time people are interested, but a little hesitant in terms of exactly what to expect.”

“With the filter that we are using we are eliminating 100% of the smell.” – Kurth

When asked about the smell and the draw on energy Kurth quickly dismisses those concerns. “With what we are doing, and if the instructions are followed, it is fine. We are using a carbon filter that is about 2/12 times overkill for the size of the tent that we are using. The reason for that is it allows us to vent inside the home. With 4 plants you are not creating enough humidity not enough anything to cause any harm. With the filter that we are using we are eliminating 100% of the smell. So the only time that you are going to smell anything is in the flower cycle when the doors open on the tent. And even then, within about 10 minutes after the tent being closed, all of that smell will be gone again. The other thing that we do in terms of the schedule on the  carbon filter is we switch it out twice as often as it needs to be switched out. One of the really important pieces is if we start creating odours in peoples houses they are not going to be interested in pursuing our services further. “

There is very little cost on the electrical bill over the course of the whole grow.

“Over the course of the whole grow all of the equipment together as it runs through the almost 4 months will cost you about $20-25 on your electrical bill. It is really inexpensive.”- Kurth

The power consumption is another one that people still think that it is going to cost 100s of dollars to run this thing. That would be true if you were running a whole bunch of 1000 watt high pressure sodium bulbs. In terms of our initial set-up, when we launch we launch with a ceramic metal halide bulb as our grow bulb which is a 315 watt. Over the course of the whole grow, all of the equipment together as it runs through the almost 4 months, will cost you about $20-25 on your electrical bill. It is really inexpensive. We are just in the process of moving to LED. It took us a while to find the right LED solution as there is so much stuff on the market. A lot of junk, and a lot of stuff that is not certified for Canada. We tested all sorts of things and now we have narrowed it down to the light that we are switching to, and running our first initial test on that. That should reduce the electrical cost to about $15 over the course of the whole grow. Most people don’t even notice a blip on their electrical bill.”

U-Bud Cannabis guarantees the grow.

“We guarantee the grow is how we put it.” – Kurth

Another concern that is addressed by Kurth is what happens if there is any other sort of trouble during the grow phase. “We guarantee the grow is how we put it. And, if there is an issue, and we have to tear out the plants, we will just re-start them and keep going until we get a successful grow. The most common point of failure is really right at the beginning. Getting it from a seed to a seedling, and then a plant that is stable that is where you are going to have the failure. Typically in the first 3 weeks. We have been pretty lucky in terms of problems along the way beyond that. We had one small issue with bugs, and we were able to narrow it down the fact that the client was allowing their cat to wander around among the plants. Not a major deal and we were able to solve it very quickly. “

U-Bud will harvest and dry for an additional cost, or simply teach you how and when to do it.

“It is not all about yielding product, particularly on the medical side. I think there is a big value for people with anxiety or other issues. There is definitely something relaxing about gardening and tending to plants.” – Kurth

We know that U-Bud will set your grow up, but what about harvesting and drying? Kurth explains ” We do provide that as part of the learning process, so the customers know exactly what they need to be doing in terms of harvesting and drying. We do offer a paid service if you want us to come out and crop, and get the drying set-up. We actually do a wet crop. As soon as the plant is done, we trim the bud, and put it in a drying rack. Not everyone agrees with our method, but it works. Not too many customers have taken us up on the service, and those who have taken us up on the service have been medical patients and they have needed the help. In those cases we have donated the service free of charge. It is also about the experience for the customer. It is not all about yielding product, particularly on the medical side. I think there is a big value for people with anxiety or other issues. There is definitely something relaxing about gardening and tending to plants. That is the feedback that we are getting from our customers. There is more value in it then just getting your bud at a cheaper price.”

U-Bud Cannabis Services – Serving GTA, Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara and The Golden Horseshoe

“We want to make sure the offering is right before we push it out across the country.” – Kurth

Currently U-Bud services The GTA, Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara and The Golden Horseshoe. As Kurth explains, “We want to make sure the offering is right before we push it out across the country. I would rather micro-market until we are confident that it is the exact right mix, then we will expand. In terms of payment plans, Kurth indicates that they are currently working on various payment options,  but at this point is only allowing a payment plan to medical cannabis users. “We are playing around with that actually. “We have just done our first payment plan grow, however right now we are reserving that option only for medical patients. We do see medical patients have a need for this, and often they are dealing with a fixed income. So, just in an effort to help people out we have offered it, and right now we are taking some financial risk on it to see what we are going to run into. We are playing with it ourselves rather than somebody else managing the credit for us. So far what we have found, people are good, people are honest, and if you are good to people they tend to return the favour.”

Container Grow could be the next thing for U-Bud Cannabis – Inside design
Container Grow could be the next thing for
U-Bud Cannabis – Outside

“With everybody that is hiding the shadows right now, once they become a little more open about it, I think we will start to see a bigger market for a more professional type install in people’s homes.” – Kurth

And where does U-bud go from here?  “We are going down a few other roads and some of this we will be looking for investor capital, but we are exploring building units where you can grow outdoor. So it would be like dropping a modified container, or piece of a container in your driveway, and having it all set-up and ready to go. That could be for a 4 plant recreational all the way up to a 52 foot container.” Kurth continues “Another area we are exploring, similar but different, is we are working with an HVAC company right now to basically install larger medical grows within homes, but do it properly and professionally. Proper wiring, proper ventilation, proper everything, so there are no issues with mould or anything like that. With starting up this business we have seen all sorts of home grows, and some of them, in my opinion, were a little bit frightening. With everybody that is hiding the shadows right now, once they become a little more open about it, I think we will start to see a bigger market for a more professional type install in people’s homes.”
