The National Safety Council presented its 2025 Green Cross for Safety awards to three organizations advancing workplace and community protections during a celebration in Denver on September 16. Amazon and Emergent BioSolutions earned Safety Advocate honors for expanding access to naloxone amid the opioid crisis, while the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services received the Safety Excellence award for fleet safety upgrades, and Puget Sound Energy took Safety Innovation for remote wind turbine monitoring. These recognitions highlight corporate responses to persistent hazards, from drug overdoses to traffic crashes and industrial fires, raising over $788,000 for safety initiatives.
Corporate Push to Combat Opioid Overdoses
Amazon responded to calls from public health officials by stocking more than 1,200 North American facilities with naloxone by the end of 2025, training all 36,000 first aid-certified employees on its use. The company joined White House panels and national media discussions to urge other employers to follow, positioning itself as a leader in emergency preparedness. Emergent BioSolutions complemented this effort after over-the-counter approval of NARCAN Nasal Spray, installing over 40 opioid emergency units in its own sites and distributing 1,300 cartons to staff. Its Ready to Rescue campaign delivered more than 2,700 kits to colleges and public venues, aiming to treat naloxone like routine first-aid supplies such as AEDs.
Opioid overdoses claim hundreds of thousands of lives annually in the United States, with workplaces increasingly at risk from accidental exposures. These initiatives address gaps in response times, where immediate naloxone administration can reverse effects within minutes, potentially saving lives before paramedics arrive. By normalizing such tools, the advocates seek to reduce stigma and barriers, fostering a cultural shift toward proactive health safeguards in professional settings.
NYC's Fleet Modernization Drives Vision Zero
The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services oversees the nation's largest municipal fleet of over 28,500 vehicles, plus 10,000 contracted school buses. Its Safe Fleet Transition Plan, launched in 2017 and updated in 2019 and 2025 with U.S. Department of Transportation input, delivered over 100,000 safety upgrades by January 2025. Key measures include the country's largest rollout of Intelligent Speed Assistance, which caps vehicle speeds to limits or agency settings, and mandatory sideguards on trucks to prevent under-ride crashes.
New York City pioneered Vision Zero in 2014, committing to eliminate traffic deaths through engineering and enforcement. DCAS's technologies target common crash factors like speeding and blind spots, which contribute to thousands of injuries yearly in urban fleets. These upgrades demonstrate how policy-driven innovation scales across massive operations, offering a model for other cities facing rising vehicle volumes and vulnerability among vulnerable road users.
Innovative Monitoring Prevents Wind Turbine Hazards
Puget Sound Energy deployed SYTIS TC-90 infrared cameras inside wind turbine nacelles and electrical enclosures, enabling remote detection of heat anomalies with email alerts. This miniaturization and software integration minimizes technician exposure to live panels and reduces hazardous tower climbs. Success in nacelles led to field use diagnosing converter failures early, averting fires and arc blasts.
Wind energy growth amplifies risks from high-voltage components in hard-to-access locations, where traditional inspections rely on scheduled maintenance prone to oversights. PSE's approach shifts to condition-based strategies, addressing nascent electrical faults before escalation. Such advancements support renewable expansion while prioritizing worker safety, aligning with industry demands for reliable, remote diagnostics.
NSC CEO Lorraine Martin emphasized the honorees' broad impact: "The impact of their work is far-reaching — protecting our workplaces and communities today and shaping a safer tomorrow." These awards underscore safety's evolution from reactive measures to integrated prevention, influencing standards across sectors.
